Representative Joseph Chaplik Legislative Update – 3-31-23
WHAT: Still focused on getting the budget passed, House Ethics Committee meeting
- Budget is still in the works, hopefully a new budget will be voted on next week.
- There was a House Ethics Committee meeting to consider complaints against Representative Liz Harris.
- Representative Chaplik’s statement regarding this meeting:
- “It is the responsibility of the Ethics Committee to consider complaints that are submitted to the chairman by a House member accusing another member of behavior that violates House Rules. It is not the Committee’s role to serve as a court of law, and today’s meeting was not a trial. It was strictly an opportunity for Committee members to formally hear from Representative Harris and gather facts in consideration of a specific and internal House matter: whether Representative Harris engaged in disorderly behavior in violation of House Rule 1. It is not within the scope or responsibility of the Ethics Committee to consider any collateral issues in this matter. As a House member, Representative Harris is entitled to due process, and today’s meeting of the Committee satisfied that constitutional guarantee. For now, the Committee has adjourned to allow the members to fully review the evidence and deliberate.”
