WEEK TWENTY-THREE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE, 6/10/23
LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
The Veto Queen did not disappoint her record. She vetoed 5 more Bills on 6/8/23; the last of the Bills sitting on her desk. Attached to this Update is an article briefly explaining her actions that was published in the Arizona Capital Times. Her total vetoes now stand at 126.
Also, keep your eyes open for another set of Bills to hit the Senate floor. They are Senator Kaiser’s housing Bills.
Senator Kaiser, Republican lawmakers and a lobbying group for Arizona cities and towns have reached a deal on legislation they say will address rising housing costs in the Valley and across the state.
On Monday, the Kaiser Bills and a few others will be on the Senate Floor and may find their way to the Governor’s desk.
This week the Governor signed no new Bills.
The following Bills were vetoed by the Governor June 8, 2023.
Bills Vetoed By The Governor: 5
SB1040 public schools; restrooms; reasonable accommodations 6/8
SB1213 legislative audit committee; procedures manual 6/8
SB1243 STO’s; individual income tax credits 6/8
SB1264 officials; political action committee prohibition 6/8
SB1597 early ballot on-site tabulation; requirement 6/8
CITIZEN LEGISLATOR
Maybe we should be used to all the vetoes the Governor has handed to us. We were warned! Even with the knowledge ahead of time, that our Election Integrity Bills would not be securely taken care of, stopping abortion Bills would not be resolved; pornography and sex-related activities would not be stopped to save our children, EVEN with this knowledge, it is difficult to understand and stomach the vetoes when they took place.
Again, attached is an article sharing with you a few of the reasons for the most recent vetoes. As lame as the reasons may be, understand the mentality of the person who vetoed these Bills and others, and maybe you can find resolve in the knowing that some people just plain do not care about the citizenry in Arizona. That in itself is very difficult to hear, when the Governor should be the one protecting our State.
In the next couple of days, I will be sending out a blog to everyone talking about TRUST.
Should we TRUST our Government? Or a belief that the government should be protecting us?
I look forward to hearing back from each one of you.
HOW TO CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATOR
The RTS (Request to Speak) system is a necessary component to our legislative process. This is an excellent way to share your positions on a particular Bill and let your legislator know that you support his/her legislation. Please review this site and make sure you know how to use it properly. The legislators depend a lot on your opinions and this is where you share them.
The link to sign up for the RTS system can be found here: https://www.azleg.gov/alispdfs/Using_the_Request_to_Speak_Program.pdf
GENERAL INFORMATION
Once again, as a gentle reminder to all of the people who just joined these updates, this is how to read the attachments. All the Bills listed on the attachments are mostly ALL the Republican Introduced Bills.
The Bills highlighted in Green are the GOP Bills I monitor on a daily basis. The Bills highlighted in Gray, are ones introduced by LD2 legislators, Senator Kaiser and Representative Wilmeth.
And, the Bills highlighted with yellow in the status and date columns, are noted for your review to see their progression in the legislative process. All Bills are up to date through 6/10/23.
And yes, I did remove most all the Bills highlighted in Blue that were Democrat sponsored. If the Bills were not moving out of Committee like the Republican sponsored Bills, they have been removed from the monitoring cycle.
Remember, each Bill Number listed is a link to the Bill itself and you can access the status, documents and Agenda’s by clicking onto the link. Even though I monitor and keep track of the Bills daily, I only send out Updates on the weekends. So, if you want daily updates on any Bill, just click onto the Bill Number, and go to Overview or Status, for real-time information. Don’t forget, there is an attachment with the Abbreviations used in the legislature to make your reading easier to understand.
As always, if there are Bills that I am not specifically monitoring, PLEASE let me know and I will add them to my list for you.
Respectfully,
Linda Brickman,
Chairman of Legislative Affairs for MCRC and Chairman of LD2 Legislative Affairs,
